Afon Mel (Honey River) mead is made in Wales from honey sourced from hives spread across the beautiful Ceredigion countryside. These small groups of hives give a beautifully blended honey from the depth and diversity of the wildflowers in the county.

Welsh honey mead is made from Wildflower Honey, and has a fantastic depth of flavour. Our meads are made using the traditional method of simply fermenting honey with water, they have the true taste of fermented honey wine. 

Handmade and matured in oak casks, Mead is a smooth honey wine that can be drunk in a variety of ways: before a meal, as an aperitif with ice or tonic water, or straight as you would drink a sherry. It is also extremely good as a dessert wine or as a liqueur after a meal.

The famous Moniack Mead is our most popular drink commanding a huge following. Its depth of flavour from the fermented honey produces a smooth, lingering, delicious taste.

This medium sweet drink is delicious served either long and cool, straight on its own or drunk as an accompaniment to a fine piece of cheese. Blended with deluxe heather honey for a beautifully rounded rich flavour. A great dessert wine.

Heather Sparkling Mead is created from our best Heather Honey which in turn creates a truely stunning Heather honey mead.

Production follows the same traditional method that is used to create the usual Sparkling Wine, but instead of using grapes uses heather honey to create the alcohol. Finishing at 12% abv which is on par with most sparkling wines and Champagnes.

Heather Honey used to create this mead, is hard won, gathered during the bees annual migration to the Heather moors in August. The production of Heather honey is very much dependent on the weather and conditions of the season, therefore in some years there may be very little honey produced indeed.

Honey: Heather Honey gathered by the bees of Northumberland Honey Co on the Northumberland Heather moors in the 2017 season.

Dryness/Tasting: Brut with 10g/l residual sugars. However due to the power of Heather honey this comes across very well and gives the perception of sweetness and is the sweetest offering in the range.

The driest Sparkling Mead in the range, produced from the spring Wildflower honey. Produced from the spring crop of honey, is the most comparable with a dry sparkling wine or champagne. A dry start with a smooth honey finish.

Light in colour, with delicate floral and honey aromas, with a dry start and smooth savoury finish, will keep you coming back to the glass. A real hit with beekeepers with the rich aroma of beeswax, propolis and fresh pollen, reminiscent of opening up a beehive in spring.

Honey: Spring Wildflower Honey gathered by the bees of Northumberland Honey Co. Including dandelion, hawthorn and white clover predominantly, a poly floral Wildflower Honey.

Dryness/Tasting: Brut with 5g/l residual sugars, a lovely well balanced acidity brings a dry start with a smooth honey finish on the palate. Lovely, beeswax, pollen and haymeadow aromas on the nose.
